Exam simulator

What the NCLEX exam simulator copies from test day

The practice exam runs full screen with the layout, tools and rules of the real exam, so nothing about the screen is new on test day.

Chart on the left, question on the rightChart tabs such as Nurses' Notes, Vital Signs and Laboratory Results sit beside the question.
Calculator in the tool barThe on-screen calculator opens from the tool bar, in the same place as on test day.
Adaptive, question by questionEach question is chosen from your answers so far, and the exam ends by itself when a stopping rule fires.
A 5-hour clockOptional breaks are offered after about 2 and 3.5 hours, and the clock keeps running during them.
Case studies that unfoldEach case study follows one client over six screens, with new chart entries added as the story moves on.
No skipping, no going backSelect Next without answering and a Response Required message stops you; you cannot return to an earlier question.

Scoring

How your mock exam is scored

Every question is scored with the rule NCSBN publishes for its format, including partial credit. Your report shows your practice estimate against the practice passing line, and the points you earned as a percentage by client-need area, clinical judgment step and question type.

Scoring rules by question type
RuleHow it scoresQuestion types
0/1Each correct response earns 1 point. A wrong response earns 0 and costs nothing.Multiple Choice, Select N, Matrix Multiple Choice, Drop-Down Cloze, Drop-Down Table, Drag-and-Drop Cloze, Bow-Tie
+/-Each correct selection earns 1 point and each incorrect selection loses 1. The score never goes below 0.Select All That Apply, Multiple Response Grouping, Matrix Multiple Response, Highlight
RationaleA linked cause-and-effect pair earns its point only when both parts are correct.Drop-Down Rationale, Drag-and-Drop Rationale
All or nothingThe whole answer must be correct to earn the point.Ordered Response, Dosage Calculation

Trend questions are scored by the rule for the format they use. The estimate and the percentages show what to study next; they are not a prediction of your NCLEX-RN result.

Adaptive

Mock exam vs the real CAT NCLEX

Both are computerized adaptive tests (CAT): they stop once they are 95% certain you are clearly above or clearly below a line, at 150 questions, or when time runs out. The difference is the difficulty scale: NCSBN calibrates the real one, while ours is this site's own rating, so our result is a practice estimate, not a prediction.

FAQ

About these practice exams

Is there a free practice NCLEX exam?
Yes. Every practice exam here is free right now, with no sign-up. NCSBN also offers a free tutorial on NCLEX.com that shows each question type.
How long is each practice exam?
Between 85 to 150 questions, as on the real NCLEX-RN, within 5 hours. Your answers decide the length: the exam ends once its estimate is clear, at 150 questions, or when the time runs out. Optional breaks are offered at 2 and 3.5 hours.
Are the mock exams adaptive like the real NCLEX?
Yes. Each next question depends on your answers so far: the exam keeps every client-need area at its 2026 test-plan share and picks a question close to your current estimate. It ends by the real exam's three rules, against a practice passing line. The difficulty levels are our own ratings, not NCSBN's calibration, so the result is a practice estimate, not a prediction.
Do the practice exams include case studies?
Yes. Every practice exam gives its own 3 unfolding case studies of 6 questions each, all within the first 85 questions, plus standalone bow-tie and trend questions.
Do the practice exams have unscored pretest questions?
No. The real NCLEX-RN includes 15 unscored pretest questions that look like any other. These practice exams leave them out, so every question you answer counts toward your estimate and your score report.
How are the practice exams scored?
With NCSBN's published rules: 0/1, +/- and rationale scoring, including partial credit. Your report gives a practice estimate against the practice passing line, then breaks your points down by client-need area and question type.
